Donna and Glass

Cutting molten glass with scissors

Glass is such an amazing material to work with.  It can be transparent or completely opaque and any variation in between.  It is resilient yet fragile,  we use it for protection from the outside environments in our cars and homes, and it can be made so thin that it flexes as in fiberoptic cables and insulation or delicate like the finest thinnest blown goblet.  Molten glass is a conductor of electricity and in its solid state it is an insulator.  It is incredible that when this material is heated to 2100 degrees you can change it with a simple breath of air, but there is no direct contact, only tools.  It can be worked in various stages, being hot, warm and cold.  The possibilities are truly endless!

Biography

Donna Gordon a Colorado native, decided to follow her passion for creating and abandon her life as an insurance agent after recovering from a serious illness.  Her education in glass began with a lesson in lampwork on New Year’s Eve 1998. However, the real love affair with glass began in October 1999 when she had her first lesson in off-hand glassblowing.

February of 2001 the decision had been made to build her own studio and by April of the same year a location had been secured and the furnace purchased. Donna with the help of her parents then began this labor of love by building the rest of the equipment necessary.

With numerous glassblowers requesting to blow in her studio Donna opened it up for rental and shortly thereafter lessons were offered as well.  The focus became taking care of the lessons and rentals because of the commitment she made.  This did not leave very much time or energy for Donna to create.

In order to get back to what she set out to do Donna relocated to Loveland, CO in 2010 and now has a private studio at her home.  This has given her the freedom to explore other forms of glass work as well.

Donna strives for her work to be original and unique.  The design of the free-standing hearts and the colorbursts are based on that principle, original and unique.  Her hearts have become not only her signature piece but are favored by collectors.
